On Saturday morning most of us met at the BP Caboolture for
breakfast before heading off up the highway to Rainbow Beach.
We stopped and purchased our permits and headed on up to the
campsite. On the way
we ran into Phil & Sharmaine who directed us to the campsite. Here
we met up with the Bundaberg 4WD Club.
After setting up camp and having lunch we went for a drive
along the freshwater track lead by Brad from the Bundy club.
When we turned onto the track we were instructed to lock in
our hubs (those of us that
had to). Just after driving past a sign saying “4wd access only” we
were once again advised to lock in our hubs if not done already. The track
was fairly easy going as the rain had compacted the sand down. We soon
found a slippery tricky spot however and I told Bill to lock his hubs in
(being the only one in the group who hadn’t done so yet!) Bill was
trying out his new car again however and ignored us all till he got to
the slippery slope and got stuck, then he had to get out into the puddles
and sloppy sand and lock his hubs so he could keep going, lucky you didn’t
need a tow Bill. Once on the other side we stopped for an ice-cream
then went up to Double Island Point for a swim, those that were keen. I
am now
looking into club sun shirts as an option for club outings
to the beach as the mix of hairy shirts that were worn by some of the male
members were
quite scary.
Back to camp for happy hour via Rainbow (the rocks were passable).
Both clubs joined together for a couple of drinks and nibbles.
After a while we all went to cook our dinners and then met up again later
for a
few more drinks and laughs around the campfire.
Next morning a few went off to Tin Can Bay to feed the dolphins.
Others stayed behind to nurse sensitive heads and tummies.
The dolphin was really great apparently although 10 mins late
and being solo. It decided
to rain on and off on Sunday so a few headed off early to return
home while others waited a bit longer to see if they could
dry out the tents before
packing up. The rain didn’t go away long enough though so most of
us packed up in the rain. We said our goodbyes to those staying
on longer and to the Bundy Club and heading into Rainbow for lunch before
heading
home. A few went down the beach and we went back via the highway.
The highway was not such a good idea as half of Brisbane was going back
home from Noosa
at the same time and the highway was a big parking lot. We
got home safely though even if it took almost twice as long to get home
as to get there.
Thanks to all who supported this combined trip. We look forward
to another trip with the Bundy Club in 2006.

We rolled up at lunchtime on Saturday to discover a great site with 3
cars from Bundy and 9 of ours. While we set up and had something to eat
Brad led the rest off on a tour of the Freshwater track – Brett can
give you the details of that. The campsite was close to the beach and the
toilets, and with Rainbow Beach just down the road it was perfect. When
the trippers returned Happy Hour kicked off, and all were amazed by Melissa’s
Southern Comfort-enhanced name/face recall. The campfire that night was
entertaining with great stories coming thick and fast, with the passing
showers proving no hindrance. The drive home was marred by a savage storm
which made driving on the highway just south of Gympie impossible and the
usual Sunday snarl from Landsborough to Chermside.
All said it was a relaxing and entertaining camp, and thanks
to Brett and Brad for their efforts. The next joint effort is ours to organise,
another half-way site like Peachtrees perhaps.
