Ormeau

4th April 2004

Sunday 4th April was my first 4WD outing after driver training. Well!! What can I say! Even though I was not driving, I will never have the words to express the adrenaline rush that I felt on this drive. Merv was the greatest leader and was totally understanding with different car abilities and considered all drivers.

So much happened that day it’s hard to know where to start. Two particular instances spring to mind.

Firstly, Chris asked me, while going down a particularly rocky part of a hill following Merv our beloved leader, to get out and move a large rock or gibber that had fallen away onto the track in front of us obstructing the track. That was easy! I lept out of the car only to disappear down into a hole lower than the car. Oppss! Lesson learnt: look before you leap!

Secondly, we got bogged in the mud, due to deep tracks and low clearance, not once but twice. We were towed backwards the first time and forwards the second time. Me being my normal blonde self left the window down while the wheels spun mud everywhere including inside the car and all over me. Lesson learnt: minimise blonde days while 4WDing.

I think the most important things I learnt on Sunday was a girls best friend is her snatch strap and “D” shackle as with out them, you’re literally up the 4WD’s track creek bed without a paddle.
