Driver Training
22nd March 2004
I experienced the Driver Training on the 22nd March 2004. I had owned
my 4WD for 8 months, never read the operators manual and understood very
little about the capabilities of the car I had purchased.
The night before driver training I read up, and was as nervous as my
first day at school. Little did I know what I was about to experience.
On the day, I was keen and ready to drive. All looked good, until I
had to lock the brakes with 20 depressions, release the handbrake and
steer the car down and up the adjoining hill. My reaction, “Shitt!” No
other word would express the fear and adrenalin rush you felt in having
no brakes to stop your 4WD. I was still panting with fear back at the
campsite.
All other experiences that day were valuable learning and the instructors
were wonderful.
I now view my wonderful 4WD with a new respect and far better knowledge
of driving thanks to the wonderful men who gave up their time to educate
me in these procedures.
