Clean up Australia
7th March 2004
Helpers on the day:
Tony Hartness, Beryl and Daryl Parcell, Graham and Sandra Moore,
Derrick Cross,
Stephen Sims, David Peebles, Kevin and Maralyn Snell, Gary
and Jan Christensen,
Carmel and Joe Elmore, Gordon Bishop and Lorraine Cummings,
Brett Lynch.
After weather conditions reminiscent of January 1974, Clean
Up Australia day was clear, fine and hot. 17 Club members gathered at the
Haig Street
Quarry at 9.00am.
We split up into a few groups, some staying and
covering the environmental area on foot, while the rest of us with trailers
attached, headed for
Henry Street to clean up the bush.
When we did the recce we didn’t notice the bog hole with the ‘Cruiser
magnet' in it. Daryl drove into it and was stuck. Brett went
and got his Patrol, which didn’t have a trailer on it, and went
in from the other end of Henry Street. After a couple of goes, and moving
the
vehicle a few millimetres, Brett gave the patrol a good boot
full. That resulted in straightening out his recovery hook. This hook
was made
by a well known and respected off road equipment manufacturer.
YOU CANNOT BE TOO CAREFUL DURING A RECOVERY
Eventually under the guidance of Gordon, with Steve Sims hooked up to
Brett Lynch with a towrope, Daryl was snatched out of the mud.
We gathered 34 bags and 4 trailers of rubbish, which just about
filled a 10 metre skip. Along with assorted car parts we found 20 tyres,
a crocheted shawl, a nightie, plenty of used bricks and concrete, and
two metal coke cans. We had a draw for a shirt and cap we were given
by clean up Australia. The shirt was won by Gary Christensen and the
cap was won by Lorraine Cummings. After sharing lunch with the Ipswich
City Council coordinator, Sally Ollerenshaw, and the Queensland Times
reporter and photographer we were all gone by approx. 2.00pm. Thanks
again to those who helped make this another successful club outing.
